UPDATE: 10-24-2008
A number of voters have recieved some negative mail pieces paid for the Republican State House Committee recycling the same old attacks the people of Oklahoma are so tired of. In these mailers, the Republican State House Committee has once again misrepresented my views. Instead of talking about the issues, they chose to take the low road yet again.
As always I am happy to discuss my positions or answer any questions honestly and completely. Many of the issues that they have raised have been dealt with, however, there are a couple of things that need to be addressed:
First, I have never said that I support the legalization of drugs. What I have said is that I believe that the medical use of marijuana should be decided by the individual in consultation with their physician.
I also am intrigued by the hypocrisy of the statement that "Dana Orwig has said she wants to raise our taxes." I have already stated that I am in favor of certain tax cuts--eliminating the state sales tax on groceries for example. I also support income tax relief for middle class families. But apparently the House Republican Committee has conveniently forgotten that my opponent in this race, Jason Nelson, lobbied for a tax increase--the sales tax to make improvements on the Ford Center. He also successfully lobbied this spring for a multi-million dollar tax credit for one of his many corporate clients. This rebate amounts to a tax increase for the hard-working citizens of District 87.
Finally, I take issue with the trend in politics in general for self-appointed spokespeople to make prouncements about what are and are not Oklahoma values. I have lived in this state for almost 30 years and spoken with the people of House District 87 and have found a wide diversity of views and opinions. I respect the right for individual citizens to make up their own minds about what they believe and I think that our diversity can be a source of strength.
Stay tuned!

Two years ago when I ran for this office I was shocked
at the ways in which my opponent distorted my positions and beliefs. He would
select one or two words from surveys or interviews, make up the rest of the
sentence and then cite the survey or interview as “proof” that it came from me.
The primary election this year was an indication that we can expect more of the
same. Here are some of the things you’ll probably hear, and here’s the truth:
"Dana’s campaign is financed by trial lawyers."
I have indeed taken money from trial lawyers as well as tax attorneys and
corporate lawyers. I have also received contributions from doctors and
insurance people, teachers and principals, union members and managers, social
workers, musicians, oil men, retirees, Democrats, Republicans, Independents,
and friends and family. I have a broad base of support and will not be indebted
to any special interest groups or causes or their lobbyists.
"Dana is supported by gay activists.
Like many Oklahomans, I have friends and family members who are gay. I also
have supporters who are gay. My position is that our government should protect
the civil rights of all its citizens.
"Dana is pro-abortion."
I believe that we should strive to reduce the incidence of abortion by
increasing access to family planning, providing adequate prenatal and early
childhood care, and promoting adoption as a positive choice. These have all been proven to reduce the number of abortions.
"Dana wants to raise your taxes. "
Not only do I not want to raise taxes, I am committed to working for the repeal
of Oklahoma’s grocery tax.
